The Vivero Letter – Desmond Bagley (Fontana Press, 1981)
Another classic slice of Bagley’s globe-trotting suspense, this time involving an inheritance letter, a deadly conspiracy, and a jungle adventure that could only have been dreamed up in the late Cold War era. Our reluctant hero finds himself whisked from the comfort of Europe to the lethal heat of Central America, dodging mercenaries, treasure-hunters, and the sort of “helpful locals” who are usually pointing guns. Expect the usual Bagley mix of clipped dialogue, brutal fistfights, and plot twists that arrive at the speed of a runaway Land Rover.
Condition: The book has clearly been loved (and possibly dropped in the bath). Spine creased enough to suggest at least one previous reader couldn’t put it down. Pages a shade more “jungle parchment” than “Fontana white.” But still entirely readable — unless you’re the sort of collector who faints at the sight of a dog-eared corner.
Why Buy It Here? Because Crappy Old Books knows the difference between “mint condition” and “actually been read.” And frankly, what better way to enjoy Bagley’s tale of sweat, greed, and betrayal than in a copy that’s already survived its own expedition?
